New Music Monday<br />PLAY LIKE A GIRL Edition

By Mike Bailey A little something different this week, On May 5th Madison Media Institute is hosting Play Like a Girl, an event  that encourages young women to get creative and collaborative with other music and media minded individuals. In the spirit of Play Like a Girl, I’ve highlight three women – ZZ Ward, Grimes and K. Flay - that are starting to garner attention for their artistic contributions.

Animating on feature films and TV productions, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

By Eric Weiss

Over my career, I have had the opportunity to animate on several very high budget and recognizable features including, Godzilla (1998), Final Fantasy the Spirits Within, Polar Express, and Superman Returns. In each project there were highs and lows and those unforgettable moments that continue to inspire me and keep me excited about the industry. In this series I hope to give you a glimpse into the Good, the Bad and the Ugly part of working on animation and visual effects on feature films and TV shows.

Every Organization Needs Video

by Nella Citino, Chair, Video and Motion Graphics

Ruth and Bill Berkan of Madison were almost taken in by an online scam.  Phone calls to their home indicated that their grandson had been arrested in Canada.  Alicia Kozakiewicz from Pittsburgh was taken from her home by an online predator and was brutally raped and tortured. These are two stories that appear on a video produced by the Madison Police Department in conjunction with the Madison Area Council of Cyber Safety for Children.

New Music Monday

by Mike Bailey My wife loves music, but she rarely reaches for the volume knob to make it louder. Yet, that’s exactly what happens when “California,” by Delta Spirit, comes on the stereo. The Brooklyn (via San Diego) band turned in my favorite performance of SXSW 2012 and the entire album has been in constant rotation ever since. The music, caught somewhere between indie rock and alt-country, is the perfect support for vocalist Matthew Vasquez‘s raspy croon.

Access vs. Ownership

By Mike Bailey I’ve been collecting records and compact discs for more than 30 years. I’ve given away more than I’ve kept, but I still have well north of 10,000 pieces. Whether my collection is impressive or indifferent, it pales in comparison to yours – that is, if you choose to access your collection. You see, the music library that I’ve spent three decades building is less than 1% of what’s available on your laptop, tablet or phone.

Audio Video in an IT World Part II : “It’s All About Control”

Audio Video devices on the market today provide multiple options for control. Most people have become accustomed to the basic handheld remote control that works using infrared bursts of light. This is referred to as IR. IR is relatively inexpensive and generally reliable providing there is a good line of sight. However this is not always possible for a number of reasons. For instance if the device is located in a cabinet or another room.

New Music Monday

By Mike Bailey: It’s been a little while since my last entry so I have three new tracks for this week. The first comes from Austin, TX blues rocker Gary Clark Jr. His four-track ep was released late last year, but the recent buzz around his SXSW performance is good cause to (re)introduce Bright Lights. Download the song for free from his website.
