Top 10 MMI Student Survival Tips
I wish I could tell you that college is easy; that your time in college is going to be perfect and wonderful and you will never have any trouble what so ever! But unfortunately, that wouldn’t be the truth. Your education at Media Institute will definitely be fun, but I’d be lying if I said it wouldn’t be challenging. There will be times when things get hard, and you’ll have to dig deep to get through those times. While it may not be easy here, there are some things to keep in mind that can help you get through those tough classes more smoothly. Here are the Top 10 Student Survival Tips to help you make the most of your time at Media Institute.
- Have goals!
Your goals give purpose to the work you do, and with out goals it is easy to drift along and stagnate. Take some time to reflect on what you want to accomplish and reflect on it often. And remember to make your goals SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time Bound.
- Time Management
One of the biggest things I see students struggle with is time management and procrastination. Take some time to build a schedule. Look at the time you spend at work, in class and on other aspects of your life and make sure you are allowing yourself enough time for your homework. Also make sure that you are spending your time effectively!
- Stress Management
Stop for a second to close your eyes, count to five and take a deep breath. Relaxing right? Or scrunch up every muscle in your body really tight and then slowly release. It may seem silly but it’s good to have ways to release the stress in your life. Consider things that help you to feel relaxed and try to integrate them in to your weekly and daily schedules to keep yourself calm and focused.
- Know Thy Learning Style…
… And know how to adapt your instructor’s teaching style to your learning style. Do you need to see images, read something, hear something explained or touch and do something to learn about it? While instructors try to present information in a way that can help a variety of learners, sometimes your instructor may not share your specific learning style. Get familiar with ways to review information that can better help you understand it.
- Start Taking Notes
Always come to class prepared with a notebook and pen and get ready to jot down what you learn. Your instructor will usually call out items that are very important or you can write down the key terms that keep coming up. Take some time after class to summarize your notes while the information is fresh.
- Make Sure to Hop Online
Even though you will spend time in the classroom at Media Institute, you will also spend an equal amount of time on SuperMoodle. This is where you will find your syllabi, homework assignments, quizzes and forums that you will need to fully participate in class. You can also check your grades on SuperMoodle. To be successful at Media Institute you need to be logging on to SuperMoodle daily!
Take a look around you. All the students and instructors at the Media Institute are here because they have a passion for digital media. Be sure to branch out and make lots of friends. You will all be working in the same industry in the future and it’s nice to have connections to draw on. Additionally, we see the most success and satisfaction in our groups of students that are well connected and support each other through their classes.
- Ask for Help
Sometimes you need to swallow your pride and admit that you need help. If you knew everything about digital media or were perfect, then frankly, you wouldn’t be here. We know that not everything will make sense to you right away or that things can come up in your life that can interfere with your school life. Get familiar with the people on campus that are here to help you.
- Be Excellent
I like to think that excellence is that little extra something you bring to what you do. You and your classmates will go through the same classes and have similar assignments. Everyone is expected to show up for classes and do the work. But what about those extra things you can do, to really make your education your own? Find ways to go above and beyond what is expected of you to enhance your educational experience.
- Know When to Have Fun
Your time at Media Institute should be fun. It’s easy to wind ourselves up so tight when we are serious about achieving something. Don’t forget to get involved in campus activities, laugh and enjoy your experience at Media Institute. We hope these tips will help start you on a path towards success here at MI.
