Fall Semester - Welcome Students!
It’s Fall Semester! Welcome back to all of our returning students and welcome to all of our new students! I’m always so happy to have students in the hallways at Minneapolis Media Institute; it’s quite lonely around here during the semester breaks. As we head in to this new semester, I find myself thinking about resolutions – you know, the New Year’s kind. Yes, New Years is still a few months away but it’s easy to look at each new semester as a fresh start, much like a new year. I often do this at the turn of each semester by considering ways that I can help my students better than I may have been in the last semester. Did you know that a third of New Year’s Resolutions won’t continue beyond the first month and less than half of people that make resolutions will stick to them beyond six months? Given this information, we might view resolutions as a fun tradition, but ultimately insignificant in making a change in our daily lives.
But I want to encourage you to not overlook the importance of resolutions. Even though they may not stick to them, people that make a resolution still have more success in making a change than those that don’t. The first step is making the resolution itself. The trick here is that you are acknowledging that you want to make a change. Going in to this Fall semester you might be thinking, “I really want to make honor roll at the end of this semester,” or “I’d like to be on the perfect attendance list.” It could be more along the lines of “I just want to be to class on time,” or “I don’t want to keep getting behind on assignments like I have in the past.” You might think “I’d like to spend more time in the labs or studios to hone my skills”; “I want to get more organized”; I want to get more involved with clubs or the Student Advisory Board.” Take some time to consider how you can improve at Minneapolis Media Institute, whatever that may be. I always like to remind students that college is an investment and that you have the opportunity to make the most of your education. There is doing the bare minimum to be successful, and then there is seizing the opportunity to go above and beyond and really grow as a professional and human being. I encourage you to be the best you can be and take advantage of the opportunities for growth in this Fall semester. Share your resolution with your instructors, classmates, or admin here at the school and let us know how we can best help you stick with it! Lastly, I want to bring some first week activities to your attention. We’ve got a fun week planned to help you get geared up and ready to take on the new semester! Pancake Breakfast Friday, September 25; 8:00am – 10:00am in the LRC Join us for a delicious pancake breakfast! All Student Meeting Monday, September 28; 12:00pm in the backyard We have an all school meeting at noon in the backyard. Please come during this time for important announcements for the upcoming semester. Snacks & Yoga Tuesday, September 29; 8:00am – 9:00am in the LRC We’re almost through the first week and you may need to relax and recharge at this point. Come for snacks and a Yoga session led by MMI instructor, Kelly Kreueger. S’mores Night Wednesday, September 30; 6:00pm – 8:00pm in the backyard We will be wrapping up the first week with a campfire in the backyard. Come hang out with your friends and have some s’mores!
